In the 1950’s German born Jewish gynecologist and scientist named Ernst Gräfenberg became well known for his studies of the role of the woman’s urethra in orgasm.
During the First World War, he was a medical officer, and continued publishing papers, mostly on human female physiology. In 1929 he published his studies of the “Gräfenberg ring”, the first IUD for which there are usage records. When Nazism assumed power in Germany, Gräfenberg, was forced in 1933 to resign as head of the department of gynaecology and obstetrics in the Berlin-Britz municipal hospital. In 1934, Hans Lehfeldt attempted to persuade him to leave Nazi Germany; he refused, believing that since his practice included wives of high Nazi officials, he would be safe. He was wrong, and was arrested in 1937 for having smuggled out a valuable stamp from Germany. Margaret Sanger ransomed him from Nazi prison, and he was finally allowed to leave in 1940, whereupon he went to the U.S. and opened a practice in New York City.
He became famous for his studies of woman’s genitalia, and human female sexual physiology; published studies include the seminal The Role of Urethra in Female Orgasm in 1950, describing female ejaculation, and an erogenous zone where the urethra is closest to the vaginal wall. In 1981 sexologists John D. Perry and Beverly Whipple named that area the Gräfenberg spot, or G-spot in his honor.
While the medical community has not embraced the whole concept of the “G-Spot”, Dr. Sanger, Dr. Kinsey, and Drs. Masters and Johnson credit his extensive physiological work. (thanks to Wikipedia)
Amara’s Comments
The Secret Fire Trigger
While it’s true Ernst was a pioneer, and some might consider him a hero who brought the insides of women’s vagina into the light of day, the G—Spot is not a new invention. Ancient Chinese Taoists refer to this area as the ‘Lute Strings’ and the Shamanic teachings of Quodoushka calls this region on the upper wall of a woman’s inner cave the ‘Secret Fire Trigger.’
While I think Ernst must have been a great guy, and I love what he dedicated his life to, I personally prefer the more poetic names. If I have to name that confounding place scientists are still pondering (and I say-let them ponder away!), I like the sound of having ‘Lute Strings’ inside me. For one thing, rather than fumbling around looking for a spot, this lovely name might encourage my lover to play gently inside me hoping to make a little music. For another, the name ‘Secret Fire Trigger’ is a lot closer to the idea of what’s inside than a ‘G—Spot’. It’s a whole ganglion of interconnected nerves and vessels—think of the beautiful illuminated branches in Avatar spreading out into a vast network of intelligent feelers. Now that’s what it feels like inside.
While scientists are still trying to figure out what on earth exists in there, (oh, and their marvelous instruments must have such a hard time pinning down what women have been moaning about for centuries,) I say let the mystery continue!
Anyone brave enough to pull my ‘Secret Fire Trigger’ will not be wondering if they have found the Gspot once I have exploded and poured in ecstasy all over the place. We love thinking we have something wonderful, special and fantastic inside, and we do!
Whether it’s somehow connected to the urethra, or called the Female Prostrate Gland (can we have a better name, please) what matters is that we are still looking, still feeling around, and still having lovely orgasms. (and they’re all good).
But really, thank you Ernst. I hope that your clinical studies were not too clinical, and that while you were alive, you smiled at our folly to name the unameable, know the unknowable or ever even slightly corner the market on women’s pleasure. On the other hand, even if people don’t know where the name G Spot came from, I think it’s a pretty good way to be remembered. There have probably been more than a few screams of orgiastic delight made by women who were glad somebody was looking for something. So viva the Gräfenberg spot!

Hi Frank, Nice article (see below) Great topic and some great stuff about testosterone … Naturally, however, I have a different take…
There are many fascinating things about men whose testosterone floods the brain with that milky mist that drowns out good sense. And there have been more than a few good men whose sexual habits led them ‘astray.’ I doubt that’s the words Tiger’s using at the moment.
Why the Testosterone Argument Cant Keep It Up
What your article implies is that hormones rule and that all you have to do to change gushing hormones is take a breath for a moment and think about things. If all this were a matter of high testosterone levels, then give the guy some wild mare estrogen cream and presto, no problem. In case pausing before doing something stupid , (which I think those in that position are hardly capable of) doesn’t work, here’s another probably impossible recourse to avoid colossal falls from grace: Honesty.
Another problem with these types of men who amass tremendous power is they have little grace. Although Tiger is pure beauty in motion, what has the game taught him?
Imagine if from the beginning of his sweet foray with that gorgeous Swede, Tiger said ‘look honey, I am a Titian,and I have a big sex drive. Now, we can set up house and hope my enormous sex drive will go away, and that I will be so enchanted by you and our future kids I will never look at another woman. Or, we can get a little honest here. Which way do you want to go? ‘
You see to me, the problem with these high powered genuises (and I do think Tiger is an incredibly accomplished man) is that while he is a great man, he has no idea how to be a good one.
What I find remarkable is how he can (could?) so masterfully strategize his game on a big green field, but when it comes to handling one women with some wisdom, he completely ignores his game. In the end, it’s not testosterone, or even dishonesty that brings great men down, it’s arrogance.
Great Men beware: if you do not nurture the women in your life with even greater care than your worldly pursuits, not only are your successes doomed to fail, they wont be worth it. Arrogance can only be tamed with sincere humility. Lets see how great a champion Tiger may be. It’s such a mythic tale, with everybody playing their bits.

Why do star athletes like Tiger Woods risk their marriages and millions of dollars in corporate sponsorship to have a sexual fling or affair? Why do high level politicians like Governor Mark Sanford risk their careers by being unfaithful? Some say men aren’t built to be monogamous but that’s not the real story. These men can learn to manage their urges and learn how not to jeopardize all they have worked for.
Most men in powerful positions and male star athletes have high testosterone levels. Men with high testosterone levels tend to be more aggressive, have a higher sex drive, want to dominate, be single focused and take more risks. They have spent their lives cultivating an alpha male status. They have testosterone flooding their brains on a minute-to-minute basis.
When any man is in the presence of any woman, his testosterone levels will rise. When a high-testosterone man is in the presence of a beautiful, sexy woman who is flirting with him, his testosterone levels are probably going through the roof. This is the way men were created. Although most men don’t often find themselves in the position of being constantly approached by beautiful women who want to mate with them, these powerful men are challenged by seduction far more often and probably succumb to it more often.
When a man’s brain is flooded with testosterone, his rational thinking capacity is diminished. Cortisol, a stress hormone, produces caution and protectiveness; however testosterone blocks cortisol. Since much of the testosterone is generated in the testicles, a man with high levels of testosterone is almost literally in a situation of all balls and no brain.
The American public admires men who are skilled athletes and votes for men who are powerful and charismatic. Those men need high testosterone levels to accomplish their missions. How can they avoid falling into the trap that their bodies have set for them?
Anger provides an example that helps illustrate what happens in the body. Anger generates testosterone, which then leads to more anger, which generates more testosterone, which then pushes one into rage. However there is a moment, at the onset of anger, when one can stop the cycle before it escalates. If a man recognizes that he is getting angry and can stop, and take a breath, he can stop the process.
Likewise, when lust generates testosterone, which generates more lust, which generates more testosterone, the cycle gets out of control. If a man can recognize the onset of lust, and can stop and take a breath before it escalates, he may be able to stop the process.
This isn’t meant to diminish anyone’s manliness; this just offers a way to prevent a manly man from losing all that he has worked for when he’s in a situation where his little head is thinking for his big head. In other words, if a man knows he is vulnerable to sexual seduction, he can be on his guard to stop and take a breath before he gives up everything for a few hours of pleasure.

In this series, we will explore Goddess ways from ancient Taoist and Shamanic traditions to help bring beauty and grace into our lives. From 7-7:30 we will meet and mingle the way women do. The evenings’ topic will be presented by guest facilitator Amara Charles followed by an open forum of questions about personal practice, sex and intimacy.
